Dubrovnik’s Old Town is best understood from above: a dense grid of marble streets and terracotta roofs enclosed by nearly 2 km of medieval walls, with the Adriatic on one side and the slopes of Mount Srđ on the other. The cable car to the summit of Srđ, 412 metres above the city, gives the classic postcard view, alongside the remains of Fort Imperial, built by Napoleon’s army in 1810.
