Best Day Trips from Dubrovnik: Montenegro, Mostar, Pelješac & More

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is easy to fall for and easy to exhaust in a day and a half. Once you’ve walked the walls and found your favourite konoba, the real reason to stay longer is what’s within a few hours’ drive: a wine peninsula, a fjord-like bay in another country, and a bridge that’s been rebuilt from its own ruins. Here’s how to choose.

Pelješac: wine, oysters and a 14th-century wall

The Pelješac Private Trip starts in Ston, defended by a 5.5 km wall — the longest fortification system in Europe — before continuing into the peninsula’s wine country. Plavac Mali, a cousin of Zinfandel, is grown on the steep vineyards of Dingač and Postup, and the tour includes a cellar tasting. Good pick if you want one destination done properly rather than a long day of driving.

Montenegro: the Bay of Kotor

The Montenegro Day Tour follows the coast road around a bay often compared to a Norwegian fjord, stopping in the tiny village of Perast before reaching Kotor’s medieval old town. The tour continues to the Kravice waterfalls, a wide curtain of falls on the Trebižat river. Same passport rule applies here as for Montenegro — Bosnia and Herzegovina isn’t in the EU or Schengen either.

Closer to home: Konavle and Panorama tours

Not every good day out means a border crossing. The Konavle Day Tour stays in the fertile valley south of Dubrovnik, built around a long lunch at a riverside restaurant, and the Panorama of Dubrovnik Tour is a short private drive to the city’s best viewpoints — a good add-on if you’re only in town for a day or two.

How to decide

If you only have one free day, Pelješac or Montenegro are the two most complete experiences. If you have two, pair a border-crossing day (Montenegro or Mostar) with a shorter, closer one (Konavle or Panorama).
