Ston walls

In 1358. Dubrovnik acquired Pelješac and erected a monumental defensive system, the largest fortification and urban achievements in Europe at the time. Dubrovnik invested huge sums of money and employed the following buiders: :Mihač and district Bunić among the first local designers: the Italians Onofrio from Naplesi and Bernandin from Parma, the French Olivier and the Florentinei Michelozzo, and stone masters Juraj Dalmatinac and Paskoje Miličević from Dalmatia.

Saltworks

Where sea shoals meet the sun, in the bays with natural broad shallow shelves, saltworks emerge. Oysters in bay of Mali Ston

The Dalmatian coast has a very long history of mariculture. Traces of primitive oyster farming-petrified oak branches with attached oyster shells-were noted by Roman chroniclers. The first written documents date from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic. Records from the 17th Century provide details on the collection and sale of oysters.

Fountain

Public fountain was built in 1581. The fountain was once used to channel water from a natural source to the people of the town. The simple renaissance ornamentation and the three heads out of which water flows, as well as the inscription dedicated to the introduction of water to the town, testify to the significance this fountain once had.

Lapidarij

Ston lapidary, outdoor collection of the Archaeological museum of Dubrovnik, is located on the ground floor of the parish office in Ston. This collection is open for public due to cooperation with the local parish priest Miljenko Babaic. Collection has about 100 stone fragments, and most of them are decorated with interlace ornaments. They are dated in the period between 9th and 11th century.

House of winemaking Tradition

In the newly reconstructed stone building of the co-operative, the House of Winemaking Tradition is opened.

History

The monumental complex of Ston and its walls have a centuries-old history.Due to a rather prominent geogeaphical location,a short isthmus connecting the Pelješac Peninsula with the mainland,and extraordinary natural resources,fertile with anaboundance of water and salt,the Ston area was settled as early as the prehistoric times.The town area of the mediaeval Ston expanded over the southern slopes of Sveti Mihajlo(St.Michael Hill).A settlement on the top has existed since the prehistory.

The Gudnja cave

A stratified prehistoric site on the Peninsula of Pelješac,near Ston,is one of those archaeological sites which has been for many years arousing a great interest of expert and scholarly opinion.

Napoleon road

The Napoleon Road on Pelješac extends from Ston, south-east of Orebić and Viganj, to the north-west of the peninsula. This district route of the French roadway along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea is 61,364 metres long.

Churches

Ston has value as a planned city built, according to Dubrovnik layout. Field of the Ston municipality reveals a story about history, from prehistoric times until today.
